Havannah
Origin
Havannah is a board game invented by Christian Freeling.
Description
Two players take part in the game, played on a hexagon-shaped tesselation of hexagons. The number of cells may very (8 cells by side is a good option to start, and the standard option is 10 cells by side).
Ludoteka.com offers the option to play with 8 or 10 hexagons by side
It is played with black and white stones.
Objective
The goal is to build a chain with the stones, completing one of these three shapes:
- Bridge: connecting two of the six corners of the board.
- Fork: connecting three of the six sides of the board. The corners are not considered part of any of the sides.
- Ring: connecting the chain with itself, so that there is at least one cell inside (free or filled with any stone).
How the game goes on
The player with black pieces makes the first move.
Moves entails in placing an own piece on an unoccupied hexagon; placed pieces cannot be moved.
There is no limit for the number of pieces, so that players place new pieces until one of them reaches the victory.
The player who makes the first move has some advantage; between expert players, this advantage is almost definitive. In order to balance the options to win the game, the swap option is used: after the first move, the player who uses white pieces has the option to swap colors instead of moving; if so, the other player (the one who made the first move) has to make a new move, but from now on he has to use white pieces.
