Description

It is and Spanish card game; the 48 cards deck is used, but figures, aces and twoes are removed, so that only 28 cards are used (from 3 to 9 of every suit).

The Spanish pack has 40 or 48 cards distributed in four suits: oros (golden coins), copas (glasses), espadas (swords) and bastos (sticks); the picture cards are sota (jack,10), caballo (horse,11), and rey (king,12). Most games are played with the 40 cards pack (pictures and cards from ace to seven), but some of them need also eights and nines.

Three players take part in the game.

Objective

The main goal is to reach the maximum possible score.

The number of hands or the length of the game is agreed previously. In every hand four rounds of bets are made.

Players use 5 cards. The value of their game is the best sum of cards of the same suit. If the five cards are of the same suit, the lowest of them is not used.

The winner is the player with the highest sum. If there is a draw, the winner is the leader between them.

The best game is got with the 6, 7, 8 and 9 of any of the four suits; when the leader gets it, it is known as trabuco.

How the game goes on

At the start of the hand every player receives two cards.

With those two cards, players make the first round of bets.

After the first round, players receive the remaining three cards to complete the necessary five. The second round of bets is made.

After the second round, players may discard the cards they do not want.

Third round of bets.

Second discard.

Frequently the pack runs out of cards, so that one or more players have no option to complete the desired discard.

Finally, last round of bets.

How to bet

In every round of bets players must indicate if they bet with their own points.

Every player chooses one of these options:

  • If he is the leader or none of the previous players has opened the round with a certain sum, the options are to pass or make a new bet.
  • If some of the previous players has opened the round with a certain sum, the options are to accept, to raise or to decline.

The player who declines the last bet loses the sum previously accepted in the same hand, and cannot take part in the game until the next hand.

Counting

In the real world the golfo is usually played with real money (just like poker), but Ludoteka has its own adaptation to play a match using an score.

At the start of the game all the players have the same amount. It is the maximum that someone could lose during the entire game.

At the start of every hand all players put 5 points automatically.

The maximum sum to bet during the hand is 100 points. So, every player starts the game with 100 points multiplied by the number of hands to be played.

There is a top limit for the accumulated bet during every round: 25 points in the first round, 50 in the second, 75 in the first, and finally 100 points in the last round.

End of the game

The winner is the player who has the highest score at the end of the agreed number of hands.

If there is a draw in the first position, the game continues until it is broken.
